What Is Handtufted Carpet?

Hotel lounge with sofas and a blue and yellow patterned area rug

Handtufted carpet is made by inserting yarn into a backing material to form the pile. The construction gives the design team control over pattern, texture, pile height, shape, color, and detailing. It is chosen where the carpet has a strong design role, such as a custom rug, lobby feature, suite, or other focal area.

Where Is Handtufted Carpet Used?

Handtufted carpet suits hotel guestrooms and suites, lobbies, restaurants, lounges, custom area rugs, and selected commercial interiors. It works best when the design needs a specific shape, texture, or pile detail.

Match the specification to the area’s traffic. For continuous heavy public traffic, compare the project with Axminster Carpet, a woven broadloom used for demanding hospitality areas.

How Does Custom Design Development Work?

You don’t need finished artwork to start. Our in-house designers work with you to understand the design direction, how the carpet relates to the space, and which details must carry through into the carpet.

We can work from an interior concept or mood board, a sketch or existing artwork, a floor plan or CAD drawing, color references or physical samples, and furniture or architectural details. Cut pile, loop pile, varied pile heights, and carved details can all be built into the artwork. Colors are checked on color poms before the strike-off.

Should You Choose an Area Rug or Wall-to-Wall Carpet?

Handtufted carpet can be produced as a custom area rug or as wall-to-wall carpet. A rug is designed around furniture, room proportions, or a feature area. Wall-to-wall carpet is planned around room dimensions, design direction, and installation requirements.

Custom shapes can follow curved areas, furniture arrangements, or architectural features. Dimensions, edges, seams, and installation details are reviewed before production.
